Market survey
Norges Bank’s operational target for monetary policy is annual consumer price inflation of close to 2.5 percent over time. Inflation expectations are one of many factors that influence developments in inflation. When analysing expectations for future price developments, it is also of interest to know the assumptions regarding the wage and interest rate developments on which inflation expectations are based. Surveys of inflation expectations may also uncover whether there is confidence in monetary policy.
One way to measure inflation expectations is to ask various groups in society about their expectations regarding future developments in inflation. This is a method that is widely used internationally. Norges Bank seeks to conduct quarterly surveys among households, business leaders and financial market participants, academia and the social partners.
